A Lesson Regarding No. 1 and No. 2

Learning the difference

Four year olds are inquisitive. They are also quick to correct adult usage, and I’m finding that they are usually right.

The other day, for example, Calliope was riding her little bike on our newly paved street. She needed some help with her protective headgear. I made the mistake of calling it a hat. “It’s not a hat, Grandpa, it’s a helmet.”

When we got home, I slipped into the bathroom. Soon there was a knock at the door.

“What are you doing, Grandpa.”

“I’m doing No. 2,” I said being perhaps too delicate.

“What’s No. 2, Grandpa?”

“Well, it’s the opposite of No. 1.”

I didn’t think I’d get away with it and I didn’t

“What’s No. 1, Grandpa?”I then explained the difference between the two and she relented, letting me finish my No. 2 in peace.
