White Supremacy Rising – A Book Review

White Nationalists Count on Trump’s Help to Build Their Movement of Hate

White Supremacy Rising

Eli Saslow, Rising Out of Hatred: The Awakening of a Former White Nationalist (New York: Doubleday, 2018).

I am only beginning to learn about the sadly enduring impact of slavery and the persistent influence of racism in the American political system. Rising Out of Hatred has helped me recognize the death grip that white supremacy has on a large percentage of the voting public. What’s maddening is that they shamelessly misinterpret history to justify it. It is incorrect history, of course, but with the help of southern politicians and complicit news media white supremacists can persuade a swath of people as ignorant as I used to be to believe the history and accept it as correct thinking to support a movement that thinks white genocide is upon us.

Good review Ron. Makes me want to read the book. Have you read Strangers in their Own Land by Arlie Hochschild? She is a Berkeley-trained sociologist who wanted to better understand the Trump base and so went and lived over a period of months in Louisiana with some of his supports. Fascinating. And her husband Adam is no slouch as a writer/historian either. He wrote Leopold’s Ghost–all about how King Leopold of the Belgians created the Conga as his own personal colony and killed about 10 million people in the process. An appalling story well told.

Thanks for that suggestion, Mike. We’ll seek it out. I go way back with Adam. He was some of the money and brains behind Mother Jones magazine in the mid-1970s. A good writer and historian, his To End All Wars is among my favourites about WWI and its conscientoous objectors.
