Nothing is for free, not even nothing

A magazine consumer alert

A big American magazine recently offered me a year’s subscription for free. How ‘bout that! In these tight times, it’s hard to imagine that anything is free. Well, guess what? It isn’t.

It’s sort of free. I could get the first 10 issues free. That would be fine if that’s where it ended. But it wasn’t. The online solicitation made it sound like the issues were free, but read down a line. You can’t get to free without paying $40 for the second year of 10 issues.

So, free costs $40 plus shipping and handling. These days I suppose that’s cheap. But let’s not confuse this with getting something for nothing. Nothing is for free, not even nothing.
