The Mass Psychology of Trumpism – A Political Viewpoint

What Did 60 Million Americans Think They Had to Gain by Voting for Donald Trump?

mad30“On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”

– H.L. Mencken, Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920

Following billionaire businessman Donald Trump’s unpredicted victory over Hillary Clinton on November 8, a pall of uncertainty settled over the world’s richest nation. As the “plain folks” who voted for Trump wait for the president-elect to start making American great again, others fear that his rise to the White House has made H.L. Mencken’s prediction come true.

Many voters, and people across the globe, are trying to comprehend what a Trump presidency will mean for them. Meanwhile thousands of Americans are rioting in the streets to protest his election and some are weighing the potential benefits of moving to Canada. The only thing that seems to have quickly stabilized is the Wall St. stock market. It hardly missed a beat.

I was not a Trump supporter. In fact, as a Canadian with a residency permit, I cannot vote in the U.S. Perhaps I was the lucky one given that voters had two terrible choices. But like many others, I am deeply concerned about what a Trump presidency could do to the world.
