Remembering Salt – A history booklet and video

A video history of Salt of the Earth in Canada to be released in 2015

Remembering Salt coverSixty years ago, the blacklisted Hollywood movie Salt of the Earth showed to 900 curious viewers at the Castle Theatre in Castlegar, B.C.

On November 16, 2014, in a celebration of this heroic battle against the spread of McCarthyism, about  150 people of the West Kootenay region again saw Salt in the very theatre that showed it in mid-December 1954.

At a time of political repression and intolerance, a few courageous individuals, members of Local 480 at the Trail smelter, brought this film about a strike in New Mexico to the Kootenays in open defiance of the political prejudice that was creeping across the border in the early 1950s.

Now a new booklet available at amazon.com and a short historical video to be released in 2015 will recount the original showing of Salt here and the struggle that took place to do get it on the screen.
